  • True Grit
A really excellent book. I read it when I was a teenager and am so glad to have read it again.
  • The Truth About the Drug Companies: How They Deceive Us and What to Do About It
Marcia Angell wrote a really excellent piece in the New York Review of Books that led me to open this, and, well, I sort of wish I just read the article.
  • The Magicians
Didn't love the beginning, but am so glad I stuck with this one. I may even read the sequel. . .
  • A Visit from the Goon Squad
Finally read it. Hard to imagine how beautiful a powerpoint presentation could be, but it was the highlight of the book.
  • Chronic City
Loved it. But, then again, I'm a sucker for satirical, sort of post-apocalyptic magic realism with a dash of paranoic conspiracy theory—especially if you set it in New York City.
  • A Gate at the Stairs
    Meh.
  • The Charterhouse of Parma
Sorry, Stendhal. After both this and The Red and the Black, I'm sort of done with you.
  • Big Machine
A fun, quick, crazy story that maybe falls apart a bit at the end, but is worth the ride.
  • Homage to Catalonia
Felt a little like high school homework to me, but a (sometimes) gripping account of the Spanish Civil War. My bookgroup really loved it, though, so give it a try.
  • Await Your Reply
Creepy, good, with some fun twists and turns. Really liked it.

Podcasts!

  • Radiolab
    Best enjoyed with no distractions.
  • Filmspotting
Film criticism. The best part is "massacre theatre."
  • Slate Political Gabfest
Can't make it through the week without Emily Bazelon and David Plotz. Oh, and John Dickerson.

In defense of Brooklyn, even though I live in Colorado and LOVE IT, but we have no Trader Joe's. I assume you do, so score one! However, if Colorado does get a TJ's, you can be sure that it will be in Boulder first. :)

I bet the bagels there are the WORST.

The food does not compare. I had to eat a bagel the other day and pretend it wasn't a turd put in the oven at 500 degrees, smothered with some burnt sesame seeds they call poppy seeds. My smugness is starting to show...

Okay, good. We've got Trader Joe's and bagels. Any other Brooklyn fans are welcome to join in. Let's keep this fight fair.

I had one brief moment of going where I wanted & ended up in Zambia for 18 months. It was pretty darn cool, but definitely didn't have bagels or Trader Joes :)

Bug, that does sound pretty cool. It's great to have those times to look back on, eh?

I do think I would love those hiking ideas. I stumble upon your blog and I found it so cool. :D
